A leader is responsible for the wellbeing of the staff in their team. Ensuring that there is a safe environment for them to work in, and that they have the required tools (including the training of the required skills) and equipment to complete the work safely.

However, the use of these tools within this environment can vary depending on the physical, mental, and emotional state of the individuals in the team and the leader needs to consider these factors, which can change from day to day and even within a single day, when allocating work and planning tasks for the day.

Variations to the external environment are relatively easy to gauge, but changes to the workers mood, and attitude can be very difficult and can impact the safety of the person and their colleagues as well as affecting the productivity of their work.

It is therefore imperative to monitor changes in behaviour of individuals at all times. Colleagues should also be vigilant in seeing changes in their teammates.

Observe how they look in a team meeting:-

- Is their appearance (clothing, hair) different?

- Is their posture normal? (or slumped, rigid, tense)

- Is their facial expression the same as usual? (or anxious, sad, angry, fixed)

- How are they moving their body? (hyper, slowed, restless, fidgety)

- How is their speech? (faster, slower, louder, softer, slurred)

- How is their general attitude? (Argumentative, Defensive, uncooperative)

- How is their mood? (inappropriate, fluctuating, flat, hostile, elated)

- Is their intellectual functioning normal for them? (consciousness, attention, thought flow).

If these things are not normal for this person, talk to them.

- Check that they are ok.

- Did they sleep ok?

- Is everything ok at home?

- Is there an issue in the workplace?

Understanding these matters can mean that the person is unable to do the work safely and may need to do a different job in this instance, or even take a day off.

If their mind is not focused on the work, due to any other factors, they could put themselves, or a colleague, at risk of injury.

If there is an issue that, as their leader, you are uncomfortable in addressing, remind them that there is an EAP service available.
