The WHY and the HOW.

Why does an employee do the work you, as the leader, want them to do?

Compliance? Because they feel they have to or should? Do they work differently if you’re watching?

Duty? Because they don’t want to let you or their colleagues down?

Commitment? Because they value the work they do and feel a sense of shared purpose?

And How will they carry out the work in each case?

Compliance will lead to presenteeism and a state of routine which will mean it won’t be long before they are looking for a new challenge.

Duty will also provide a workplace which works well, but does not look to improve productivity. A comfort zone.

Commitment will see the workforce striving to improve processes and exceed targets and expectations.

So how do we manage to get commitment across the workforce?

Create a sense of belonging. Everybody wants to be in a community - it’s part of our DNA!

To do this : -

- Involve people in the decisions and show that they are valued and appreciated. Their role is integral to the success of the team.

- Give them a sense of purpose and a united goal. Give them a Why the work is being done.

- Let them have a sense of control over the work. Even if it’s just a way to voice an opinion. They can contribute to the How the work is done.

- Help them understand your role as the leader. You’re part of the team, but you are responsible for the overall performance. They are accountable for their work, but you are responsible for the outcome.

- Make feedback to and from each other a regular and safe occurrence.

You, as the leader are there to develop a psychosocially safe working environment which enables the workforce to work to their optimal performance level. To ensure that each team member has the right tools and equipment and they have the skills to complete the work.

As a member of the team, do you have the right skills? Leadership is a difficult discipline. InteChange provides coaching and training to existing and aspiring leaders to assist them in developing these skills and getting the most from their teams.
