Trusting Relationships

When we meet people, we tend to talk about things that we know and are sure of - facts and figures.
As the relationship develops, we feel safe to express opinions and our beliefs.
Then, as the relationship further grows, and we get to really know someone, we discuss feelings and emotions.
A psychosocially safe working environment is one where we feel safe to express ourselves. It's not a regulated path. Some people will develop the relationships with others faster than others. People will be at different stages of the journey with different people and, as leaders, we need to recognise the state of the relationships between you and them, as well as between team mates.
Note, a trusting relationship is built on respect and does not necessarily require friendship.
How do we develop a trusting relationship?
1. Prove you are trustworthy
- Act on your word
- Admit to errors and mistakes - show your vulnerability.
- Keep the secrets that people have shared with you.
- Don't speak of others behind their backs,
2. Take the Leap of Faith and Trust people.
- Take people at their word
- Represent them to others (Senior Managers)
- Accept mistakes and hel people learn from them.
- Don't judge.
- Speak positively about people.
3. Expose vulnerabilities
- Speak of your Beliefs and Feelings
- Give something of yourself.
