How do you view leadership? If you have been given an opportunity to lead, it is because someone feels that you have the skills to develop the team and the individuals and your manager trusts you with a particular part of the business.
Leadership is not something that is bestowed on everyone. The manager has seen traits in your behaviour to delegate responsibility of an important function on you.
Being made a leader means that your skills are being valued and appreciated. Your Manager wants you to succeed. Because your success reflects on them, and your poor performance means their “failure”.
I speak to many leaders who seem to feel that they have been given the position as some kind of punishment, or maybe a poisoned chalice.
No, leadership is a privilege. An opportunity to help the business, and the people in the business grow.
So if you find yourself in this position, make the most of it and be the leader that you’d want to work with!
If you feel that your leader doesn’t support you, or provide a clear purpose or doesn’t empower you, BREAK THE CHAIN and be the leader that he isn’t.
- Find out what your team needs
- Look for input and ideas
- Give the a Purpose
- Trust them
- Give them the Why and get their input on the How
- Make them feel that they are Valued and Appreciated
- Give them a sense of Belonging
- Understand each team members motivation and ambitions
- Help them realise these ambitions and Grow
- Support them in their work, when they need it.
With privilege comes responsibility. You are responsible for the wellbeing and performance of your team, but you can only do this with their involvement and input. Trust them and they will trust you.
Leadership is not bestowed on everyone. When you get the chance, make the most of it.
