How many leadership styles can you name? Over the years there have been a plethora of new ideas and concepts introducing new approaches to management and leadership.

You will undoubtedly be able to add to the list below, but here are a few:-

- Authoritarian (Autocratic)

- Participative (Democratic)

- Delegative

- Visionary (Inspiring)

- Coaching

- Affiliative (relationship based)

- Pacesetting

- Commanding

- Transformational

- Transactional

- Servant

- Host

So when I talk about People Focused Leadership, it is unsurprising that people roll their eyes as if to say “here we go again”.

The truth is that all of the above have a place in leading a team. In a fire or emergency situation, you don’t want a leader to sit down with the team and discuss options. You need action and decisiveness.

People Focused Leadership recognises the need to lead as fits the situation, but the overriding focus is on the team members. Their wellbeing, their development and their safety.

With this approach, employees feel valued, they have a sense of belonging and a common purpose. With People Focused Leadership there is psychosocial safety in the workplace and when people feel trusted and empowered to speak up, innovation thrives. The effect on team performance and productivity is significant.

The team also appreciates that their leader is a coach, inspiration, a servant to the team, a decision maker and, sometimes, an authoritarian. However, they trust them to use the different leadership styles as fits the situation.
