Leadership is so much more than providing task related instruction and direction. It’s about ensuring that the workplace is optimised to ensure that the employees can perform at their highest level.

It’s about creating a culture where everyone is comfortable to be their authentic self.

This means that they feel safe.

- They know that they have the tools and equipment to do the work effectively and safely.

- They know that there are no risks and hazards in the workplace that have not been mitigated or managed to ensure their safety.

- They know that if there are new risks and hazards, or there is an incident or near miss, that there is an effective process to learn from it and improve the workplace and the processes within it.

- They know that they can speak out to alert colleagues and their leader of things that are concerning them, without the fear of negative consequences.

- They know that if they are not feeling at their best, they can communicate it and be allocated relatable work that will not put them in danger.

- They know that their leader understands them and trusts, values and respects them.

Leadership should start with this level of safety. Before any other work starts.

Carry out a workplace inspection to check that you’re providing a safe environment for your team.
