It is not surprising that many organisations, especially small businesses with reduced specialised resources, feel overwhelmed. In addition, it is important for the leaders in these organisation to manage their own mental health !!

Mental Health is a minefield for many organisations. As well as the public mental health requirement for a healthy workplace and the need for businesses to promote health, there are regulations covering the model WHS Laws, Fair Work Act (2009), Workers compensation Laws, Privacy Act (1988) and Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and additional Codes of Practice and International Standards (ISO45001 and 45003).

Ultimately, for the leaders, it boils down to 3 priorities:-

  • Managing your own mental health

  • Ensuring that your workplace is fit for purpose and your employees mental health is maintained

  • The workplace and processes meet the legal obligations.

Following the introduction of the Codes of Practice which have been recently introduced in NSW and WA (and will follow in other states), the recommended starting point would be to :-

  • Understand the risks and eliminate, mitigate or manage them accordingly.

  • Identify the responsibilities of the PCBU and ensure a clear understanding of the psychological and the physical health requirements.

  • Consult with workers on psychosocial hazards and risks and how to ensure that they have a voice in the workplace.

In a busy organisation, this is easier said than done. Who is going to facilitate this work? HR (or the People) department? The HSE department? Operational Managers? In smaller organisations, these roles aren’t distinct.

Ultimately is needs to be owned by everyone in the organisation, but initiated from the top.
