Maximising the productivity of the team requires the workers to feel that they are unified in their purpose and have a sense of belonging. Just as a sports team needs to combine their respected strengths to perform at a high level; the business workforce needs to recognise how their skills can be utilised to the best effect.
The Leader of the team needs to demonstrate what they are providing to the team and how their work benefits the operation. They need to show the other team members that they are an important part of their team.
As well as the leader showing appreciation of the team members and making them feel valued and respected, the team needs to appreciate what the leader is doing for them.
The result is an engaged team, working at the highest level.
As a leader, you have to take the initial steps: -
- Get to know your team members. What is their motivation for working?
- Sit in with the team members at smokos (every now and then).
- Be prepared to be emotionally vulnerable. Give something about yourself that they can relate to.
- Share what you do, with them, and how it helps them in their work.
- Show how you are part of the team and not separate to them.
- Ask open questions about them.
- Ask what they need from you. What is their biggest challenge?
- Use the toolbox/pre-start meetings to energise them. How would they like to see these meetings run?
- Give them a voice. Ask for their input. Respond to their issues.
- Be positive. Focus on the wins and learn from the mistakes. Ask for input on improvements.
Remember, as the leader you don’t have to have all the answers, but you have a team with which you can find the answers together.
