Communication - The Key to Success

Unrest and uncertainty can spread so quickly through an organisation. The rumour mill often fills the void left when staff aren’t aware of what is happening in the business. A few unhappy employees can unsettle teams and result in your attrition rates spiralling.
In cases where there has been a change in management, many employees are asking themselves:
“What is going to change for me?”.
“Will the new boss like me?”
“Will I be able to do the work expected of me?”
The longer there is no news, the more they worry about there position. In many cases, even when there is nothing to worry about, and their job is not going to change.
Many organisations delay making announcements on a restructure, or change, until they have developed a slick presentation for their teams, and wait for weeks until it is perfect. In that time the employees are aware that there are going to be changes and start to “fill in the gaps”. Some will decide to look for other roles as a consequence, and the business loses talented workers.
As with every aspect of leadership; the key is communication. Treat your team with respect and let them know what is happening. The longer they are in the dark, the worse it becomes. They start to feel undervalued, under appreciated and untrusted.
Who wants to work in a business who doesn’t value, appreciate or respect their staff??
Start the communication early. Involve them in the process.
Consult the workforce on
- Why the change is happening
- What the purpose of the organisation is going forward. (Get everyone on the same page)
- How they can contribute in the change
Remember that communication is two way. Listen to their views and concerns, and look to them to help form solutions.
Good communication will ensure that everyone feels a sense of belonging, and also feel that they have some control in the process. If they feel they are part of the process of change, then they will help you make it a success.
